Holiday News from the Studios of Contemplative Artist Brian Sylvester

Studio Shot 12/7/13

Studio Shot – December 7, 2013

It’s been some time since I’ve written a blog post, and a lot has happened over the past six months.  It’s true, sometimes life knocks you off of your regular stride and forces you to rethink things.  As an artist, this usually allows for an outpouring of creativity, and in my case, a new direction of focus.

Many of you are creatives as well, and you all know that choosing to be a working artist can be a very challenging endeavor.  Financially, it is very tough sometimes, but the rewards of being able to pursue a career path that one is truly passionate about is priceless.  It’s been a tough year, but I can sit here and say that I am the happiest that I have ever been in all of my life.  I have a clear vision of the future, and I am grateful that I can share my journey with all of you.

It seems even longer since I did the Singular Ocular Series when I had my studio space at Vernon Street in Massachusetts.  At the time, I just sat down to paint and had no idea of what I wanted to do. Looking back, it seems odd that I started off with a series of single eyeballs, but today it makes perfect sense.

The painting process for me is very much the same today, I sit down with a blank canvas and let the work flow.  I never pre-plan and often don’t remember painting a piece after it’s finished .  In this aspect, I consider myself very fortunate – the work has continued to progress over the years, and I am always excited and surprised as to what comes next.
